A Brief Biography

The Rev. Barbara Merritt is a third generation Unitarian.  She graduated with Honors from The University of Texas at Austin and received her Masters of Divinity from Thomas Starr King School for Ministry.  She was ordained in 1975 and served the federated UU church in Woodstock, Illinois before coming to The First Unitarian Church in Worcester in 1983.  She received an honorary doctorate in 1989 from Starr King and from Assumption College in 1992.  In her 16 years in Worcester, she has served as President of the Downtown Clergy Association and is a member of Worcester Interfaith.  In the larger denomination, she has served on the UUMA Center Committee (for professional continuing education), is a member of Prairie Group, and of the Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship.

She is married to Jeffrey Merritt, an engineer, who teaches physics and science at St. Peter-Marian High School.  They have two sons, ages 12 and 16.
