Chalice Children (for children who are already 3 years of age, but
not yet in kindergarten): This class will open at 10:15 to allow parents time to
settle their children before worship begins. Our church is a place where
there are many different people and different families. This Sunday our
discussion will raise awareness of how alike and how different the UU
families that make up our church are. It will encourage children to take
pride in their families and to celebrate their part in the whole church. |

Worship Begins | |
| Sermon: "Through the Eyes of Faith" | |||
| The Rev. Thomas Schade, Associate Minister - preaching | |||
|
What is it that we are watching when we observe the United States and Iraq move closer to armed conflict? Is this about oil? About nuclear weapons? About personal honor and revenge? About the United Nations? A clash of civilizations? Terrorism? Can we see it another way, with the eyes of faith? This Sunday, our worship will be enriched by special music by the teachers and students of the Joy of Music Program. For years the Joy of Music Program, a community music school led by Rich and Wendy Ardizzone, operated here at First Unitarian Church. After the June 2000 fire, they moved to a wonderful new location. They return today to celebrate the many years of creative cooperation between JOMP and our church. Our entire collection this morning will go to the Joy of Music Program. |

Sunday School Notes
|
||
| Feeling at Home (for children in Kindergarten): Our bodies are special places. It is important that we "feel at home" in our bodies. On Sunday, we will play some active games and we will use our senses to enjoy our room. Teachers: Alicia Lenahan, TBA | ||
|
|
||
| Stories About God (1st grade): This Sunday, we will consider the concept that some people explain life's mysteries using the word "God" and others explain them with other words. We will have several experiences where everyone has a different view, and it is OK. Teachers: Kelley Boulay, Leah Hrozenchik | ||
| Adventures of God's Folk (2nd grade): Last Sunday, we discussed the difference between a rule and a law, and we learned about Moses bringing the commandments from God to the Hebrew people - but we only got as far as the 4th Commandment. We will learn about the rest of the Commandments and about the building of the Golden Calf this Sunday. Teachers: Suzanne Westbrook, Kirsten Ura | ||
| Holidays and Holy Days (3rd grade): Last Sunday, we learned about the birth of Mohammed, about the Five Pillars of Islam, and about praying. This Sunday, we will learn about Ramadan, one of the most important Islamic holidays, and about fasting. Teachers: Mary Ryan, Jennifer Dolbashian | ||
| Stepping Stone Year (4th grade): As part of our unit on stories scientists tell, we will learn about Charles Darwin and what he discovered about evolution. Darwin was famous for collecting things such as beetles and shells. Do you have a collection of any kind? If you do, and are willing to show it on Sunday to our class, please bring your collection, or part of it. Those who made plaster fossils last Sunday will have a chance to unmold them. Teachers: Renee Bombredi, Maureen Shaughnessy | ||
| Timeless Themes (5th grade): Our theme this week is giving and forgiving, as illustrated in the story of Joseph and his dreams in Genesis 39-48. We will talk about forgiveness for wrong-doing and discover other themes in the story such as the meaning of dreams and famines. Teachers: Cynthia Morales, Peter Gray, Diane Pingeton | ||
| Life and Teachings of Jesus (6th grade): We will move now to a very interesting story about Jesus being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. What are your temptations? Teachers: Deborah Cary, Henry Keyes | ||
| Neighboring Faiths (7th and 8th grades): On Friday, November 15th, the class is going to visit Temple Emanuel for the Shabbat service, and then return to the church for make-your-own sundaes. Everyone must have a signed permission slip. On Sunday, we will wrap up our study of Judaism with a recap of what we saw, heard, and learned at the Temple. Teachers: Tim McNamara, Beckley Alley | ||
| Senior High: Because the Joy of Music Program is providing the music for our service this Sunday, the senior high youth are invited to remain in the sanctuary for the worship service. |

We are pleased to welcome long-time member of our parish, Wendy Ardizzone, Director of the Joy of Music Program, to our Memo space this week. Wendy, along with her husband, Richard, spent many years at First Unitarian educating students of all ages in the fine art of music. Their school has grown considerably since the early days of 1986, and continues to thrive at their new facility. The Joy of Music Program will be providing the music for this Sunday's Worship Service, with a special prelude beginning at 10:15 a.m.
|
|
It is no secret that non-profits believe in and rely on angels, "angel" being the affectionate name given to a major benefactor. Marvelous things can be accomplished in partnership with an angel. Did you know that the First Unitarian Church has been the Joy of Music Program's most significant angel since the school's inception in 1986? JOMP would not be what it is today, if it hadn't been for this church's extraordinary generosity to us as tenants. You made it possible for a Music & Movement program, which started out with one teacher and twelve preschoolers, to blossom into a non-profit community music school with 500 students ages 3-80, a staff of 4 and a faculty of 34.
For over 15 years, your gift of sharing large amounts of space with the school for very low rent allowed us to build an organization with a strong foundation. You enabled us to focus on our mission "to foster community through accessible music education and performance" and to apply our annual fundraising to programs that help us fulfill that mission. For example, our Financial Aid and Outreach Program makes it possible for low-income parents, who never imagined it was within their reach, to bring music into their children's lives. These funds also help children and adults keep music in their lives, if their family is faced with unexpected financial challenges resulting from job loss or from the illness, disability or death of a parent or spouse. Last year we awarded over $60,000 in financial aid to 89 students (18% of our student body).
The missions of First Unitarian and JOMP have much in common, and there has always been a deep respect for the work the other is doing. Over the years many families have been attracted to the church as a result of their connection to the school, and many of our students became aware of the school through their membership in the church. Like First Unitarian, the Joy of Music Program serves a community of all ages, and we also hope we are making a difference in each of the lives we touch.
We have experienced a great deal together, including the fire: the sorrows, the losses, the exhaustion - the grace, the outpouring of community support, and the spirit of renewal that followed. We held each other in our thoughts and in our hearts as we faced the parallel challenges of recovery, renovations, and capital campaigns. Even though you were going through major adjustments of your own, you continued to provide space for programs that the Wesley United Methodist Church was not able to accommodate when we moved across the street.
And now, as we celebrate the start of our first full year in our own building, you are embracing the school once again with the gift of this Sunday's offering. Rich and I are deeply touched by this and by your understanding of the importance of JOMP's commitment to serving the whole community. While life gets more complicated, uncertain and stressful, music's ability to energize, console, uplift, heal, bring people together and nourish the soul remains constant. It provides us with a means of expressing our deepest emotions, our most personal feelings - in truth, our very souls - as nothing else can. Music can enhance the power of the spoken word and even take over where words leave off.
Is it any wonder that I am left asking myself, "How can we ever possibly thank the church enough?" For assistance I am turning to the three sources of inspiration behind everything we do at JOMP: our faculty, our students, who continually remind us how important music is in their lives and show us that music has the power to change lives, and music itself. Rich and I will be joined by the first faculty member I hired, Madeline Browning, and 10 students in providing the music for this Sunday's service. We are delighted to have been granted this opportunity to express the Joy of Music Program's heartfelt gratitude to the First Unitarian Church through music, beyond my ability to do so in words. |
