Welcome to The First Unitarian Church of Worcester!

On behalf of the entire congregation, we are delighted to have you visit with us at our church web site.  Our parish was gathered in 1785, and like so many generations before us here at the First Unitarian Church, we are inheritors of a rich tradition and a vibrant church. We are responsible to preserve and enhance what is best about this church, not just for ourselves in the present moment, but for future generations of religious liberals, for our children and their children, and all those that come after us.

First Unitarian's Mission statement is:

We come together as a community of people to deepen our spiritual lives and to live in right relationships with our fellow human beings and with all creation. We are committed to moving closer to truth, to reality, to God. We covenant to unite in the love of truth, and in the spirit of Jesus, for the worship of God and the service of all.

Our parish's mission is supported by enduring values which include:

  • Our church has no creeds or doctrines. We seek to preserve the freedom of each of us to determine for ourselves what we believe and how we should live. We are open to the wisdom of world religions. We welcome and honor diversity of belief, culture, lifestyle, and political view as a source of strength.
  • We are committed to nurturing the spiritual lives of our children. Our children are rich sources of life and inspiration. In our intergenerational community we promote the learning and growth of our members of all ages.
  • We value the Unitarian tradition that we have inherited from those who came before us in this parish. We seek to preserve and enrich this tradition for all those who follow us. We acknowledge and honor the Jewish and Christian traditions as the origins of our Unitarian Universalist heritage. We value our connections with other communities of faith in Worcester and around the country.
  • We worship together in the sacred space of our sanctuary through the spoken word and music. We choose to live in community and discover the spiritual in the ordinary. We are called to be present to one another in suffering, to risk being uncomfortable, and to celebrate the holy in each other and in the world around us.

In a society where we are all increasingly busy and isolated one from another, we consciously seek to build community. A community where we can reconnect to the true sources of our life, to the miracle being in relationship with each other, and to our rightful place in the larger world around us. We choose to come together in community to preserve the freedom of the individual to follow their own path. We seek to find the spiritual in the ordinary and to learn from the difficulties and the joys of community.

We invite you to participate in the life of this parish. The information on this web site is designed to help you get to know us and the many opportunities for coming together that we offer. Please participate. Sing in the choir or come listen to the beautiful music. Ask questions or offer some answers. Your presence in our midst makes us a stronger congregation.

Our best hope is that this church supports you on your personal journey. That it is a place for you to move closer to what is true, what is real, and what is holy. May we grow together in faith and learn to support each other on the mysterious, difficult, and wondrous journey of life.

Sincerely,

The Ministers and Moderator of First Unitarian
